Tip o’ the Day: Don’t Bag Your Bananas!

Today's tip is so simple, but it's got to be said. Don't bag your bananas. Do you do it? Most people do. We're not sure why. Bananas are already kind of pre-packaged and ready to travel. They are even attached to each other; they almost provide us with a little handle to grab them by.

We're always talking about bringing your own bag, and avoiding plastic bags at all costs - but this is (quite literally) a low-hanging fruit. Just cut out the bag all together. Let's start a Banana Bag Ban - the BBB will unite to educate others one the uselessness of bagging those bananas.

Rebecca says: I'd really like to know if you are in the habit of bagging bananas. I grew up this way, but have had to teach each of my roommates over the years that the bag is unnecessary. I can't really find stats on the topic (strange, I know), but imagine how many plastic produce bags would be saved if we all stopped bagging our bananas. Sounds naughty.

Send me your tips! I want to hear what you have to say!

Never heard of anyone bagging bananas.

  2. Paige Says:

Yes, this is a conundrum for me as well. It seems strange, but I literally question it everytime I get bananas and only recently finally broke the habit of not bagging my bananas (simultaneously when I bought my reusable grocery bag), curious:-)

  3. Clayton Bodie Cornell Says:

Most grocery stores want to bag *everything*! Don't let them put each item in a separate bag!

  4. Marc Says:

I’d suggest not getting them near your clothes when transporting them though, as the sap is known to stain clothes permanently.

I do some minor banana growing in my backyard and have some badly stained work clothes :D

I really don’t bag anything unless it’s a bunch of loose things like apples, and only if I’m getting more than two. If I get asparagus or something that’s bundled, I just let it be free.

I just recently found this link (http://www.reusablebags.com/store/shopping-bags-produce-bags-c-2_10.html)
for reusable produce bags you can take to the store with you. I’m probably going to get around to ordering them this week.
